The Environmental Education Center (EEC) at Lord Stirling Park offers approximately 9 miles of hiking trails, Naturalist led programs, school field trips, fun festivals, nature themed exhibits, facility and classroom rentals, a resource library, science and conservation research, and more. Our goal is to improve environmental literacy in Somerset County and beyond.
Programs / Education
School programs are led by an Environmental Education Center (EEC) Naturalist and can be conducted at the EEC or at your school.
EEC based programs take full advantage of the park's 500 acres. The park serves as an outdoor classroom where students can use hands-on learning to explore fields, forests, marshes, and swampy areas along the upper reaches of the Passaic River. All program offerings are designed to be supportive of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). For a complete list of specific NJCCCS and NGSS program connections please view our Curriculum Content List.

Things to See & Do
The Great Swamp Experience (exhibit) opened in February 2017 and is a permanent, interactive, educational exhibit located downstairs in the EEC. The exhibit highlights historical and ecological information about the Great Swamp. Children can crawl into a beaver lodge, feel animal fur, or explore the toddler area. Adults can enjoy viewing habitat vignettes, archeological artifacts, and learning about hydrology, sustainability, and the park's geographic location.
There is one main parking lot off Lord Stirling Road that provides access to the EEC and the nature trail. There is no launch access to the nearby river from this lot.
We were pleasantly surprised during our visit to the park in theFall of 2018 with how nice the Great Swamp Experience exhibit is. VERY well done, very educational, simply a great setup.
