Duke Farms, located on 2,740 acres in Hillsborough, Somerset County, N.J., is one of the largest privately-owned parcels of undeveloped land in the state. Owned and supported by Duke Farms Foundation, an operating foundation of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, created by James Buchanan Duke and preserved by his daughter Doris. Duke Farms is rich in ecological, horticultural and agricultural resources. Through the beauty of its natural setting, the diversity of its wildlife, and the scope and quality of its educational programs, demonstrations and research, Duke Farms inspires people to transform their approach to conservation and to start building a more sustainable future. Duke Farms serves as a habitat for native plants and animals, visitors can explore miles of trails through woods and meadows, and along lakes and streams.

Trail & Path Info

Numbered path markers at intersections help visitors identify their location on the map and can be a helpful journey guide.

Walk and Hike

On paved ways, stone lanes and mulched paths. There are more than 18 miles of trails to explore. Wear comfortable outdoor walking shoes.

Bicycle

Bring your bike or rent one of ours! Grab a map from the Orientation Center, take a free Tram ride over to the Bike Rental tent and spend an afternoon exploring on our special bike paths and trails.

The Tram

The Tram leaves every 30 minutes from the Orientation Center. Disembark at any of the four stops and explore then jump back on to return to the Orientation Center, or ride the route and enjoy the view!

Trip Ideas

Begin your visit at the Orientation Center housed on the first floor of the historic Farm Barn. Find information on upcoming programs and events, tour interactive exhibits to learn about the ecology, history and mission of Duke Farms, view a short film on the history of the Duke Family and property, borrow an Eco-kit to take with you on your exploration and stop in the Cafe to see what's on the menu. Ask for trip ideas from our friendly front desk staff and map out your journey. Start off on a path or take a free tram ride to one of the stops throughout the property and begin there, the possibilities are endless as there is so much to explore and see at Duke Farms. No two visits will be the same!

Admission & Guidelines

ADMISSION IS FREE! Please remember that pedestrians and wildlife always have the right of way. Duke Farms has a carry in / carry out policy for trash - please take it with you when you leave or bring it back to the Orientation Center and dispose of it in our bins. Please follow the marked trails and paths, vehicles are restricted to designated areas ONLY and are not allowed throughout the property. Pets are not permitted.
